Few people give consideration to what happens after they buy something off the web.
As an interent marketer and mentor to a number of "students" of Internet Marketing, I analyze, daily, the myriad of offerings and, in many instances, purchase products I feel would benefit me in the growth of my own websites as well as my students.
Over time, I have found that the sellers of Internet Marketing products appear to fall into three different and distinct groups.
First, there are legitimate authors of products who want to provide quality products. And they realize the value of providing quality customer service is essential. Finally, they want to provide long-term support to build a quality reputation. My hat is off to those people as they are an essential part of the "fabric" of Internet Marketing.
The next group are those "Gurus" who are best described as "fly by nighters". All too often, these guys have stolen other good authors products, changed the names of the product, "tweaked" them slightly to elude discovery then market them through a compelling sales page. Their interest in the the short term. Very often, these guys are not really "Gurus" by design. They are smoke and mirrors. These purveyors of IM products rarely supply a good level of customer service after their initial launch. With regard to plugins or other software products, they rarely, if ever, provide updates to the product they originally sell. And if you have problems or find that the product conflicts with an update (often the case with Wordpress related products) there is no one there to anwer your questions, supply updates, etc. Very often, they shut down their sites and move on to the next "Hot" product they are promoting. I could go on and on about the diaglogues I have had with these creeps over the years. Suffice to say I wish them no success. They simply do not deserve it!
The Third group is affiliates who market the "fly by night" GURUs. Because they are only promoting some others products, they have no "skin in the game". With nothing to lose, their focus is entirely on selling the product and getting their share of the revenue. When you try to reach them, they make the entire process a struggle.
One of the first things you can be sure you will be asked from any of these seller types (who are still reachable) is to provide adequate documentation of your purchase. And if you haven't by now started a purchase file, you had better do so!
Honest authors simply want ot substantiate you purchased the product. All too often, affiliates will copy the product being sold and sell it making 100% of the purchase prices instead of their share. Dishonest authors simply request all the purchase information to complicate the process so you will just give up and go away.
In any event, you should document every purchase you make. Includee a copy of the sales page, the way you paid for it and documentation you can reference, the date you made the purchase and any and all information you can compile to adequately substantiate your purchase. If you do not do this, I assure you that some time in the future, you will pay the price for failing to keep this file. One final note, I make this process easier by sending the files to myself via email then storing them into a file I have created on the email server. In this way, it is unlikely the files will go away as the result of a hard drive crashing or other similar problems AND you will be able to access this information from anywhere you are. Alternatively, you might simply store it in a Dropbox folder or "in the cloud" of a service provider. However you store your purchase information, you will be ahead by putting a documentation system in place.
